World of Warcraft is the most sold Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) to date. The game’s retail version was released in the United States late 2004, and immediately became a hit. It sold more than 650.000 copies the first three months before it was released in other parts of the world, making it the fastest growing online game to date compared to other MMORPGs. On 7th March 2007, the user base crossed an amazing 8.5 million active accounts.

On 16th January 2007 the first official expansion pack was released. The game sold nearly 2.4 million copies that day, breaking numerous records. The expansion was shipped with a lot of new content, including: Player versus Player Arena system, a new battleground, raised level cap (60 to 70), several new 5-man group dungeons as well as raid dungeons and a new profession.

When creating a character in WoW, you have several choices. You can pick between ten races and nine classes, each with their unique spells, abilities and play style. The main choice you will have to make is what side you want to join; the Horde or the Alliance. This will limit the people you can directly talk to in-game, as you will only be able to chat with characters from your own faction. You can only add a character as friend and group up with members from the same faction as you. Note this if you want to play with your friends; you should all join the same faction.

When you enter the world with your newly created character, you will see a brief cutscene-presentation of your race. You start the game as level 1, with almost no abilities. You do quests, explore and kill monsters to gain experience and items to level up and become stronger. Questing is the main method of gaining levels. Players who try to merely kill monsters all the time will find it much harder to advance in levels compared to those who do quests. The quests can vary from simple and dull to complex, interesting and fun. All the quests have a unique story to tell, making the world feel more alive. Sometimes you will also be rewarded for turning in quests, with for instance: Gold, potions, food, rare items, armour and weapons.

When you’ve quested your way to the level cap (currently 70) you’ll be able to access the end-game content. The main achievement in end-game is for most players, however you are of course not limited to this and may do whatever you please and find fun, is to gain good armour and weapons; equipment. The way this is done is usually split up in two types of play: Player versus Player (PvP) and Player versus Environment (PvE).

PvP consists of:

• Arena matches, where you create a team of 2, 3 or 5 people and then fight to the last team standing in the arena. Your Arena Team Rating (ATR) will change depending on whether you loose or win the match. The ATR change also depends on your opponent’s team. If they have a high ATR, you will gain a lot and vice versa.

• Honour, where you kill the opposing faction either in battlegrounds (which has an objective you will get bonus honour if completed), or in the open world.

• Zone PvP objectives, where certain zones have objectives you can complete to gain rewards. Examples are capture all the towers in a zone, gather rare materials which makes you very visible and bring it back to a camp and take over a city.

With all of the above you will either get tokens, marks or some sort of currency which you turn in for rewards.

PvE consists of:

• Instances, where you venture into dungeons with four other people and defeat monsters and bosses to get some kind of reward. Here, there is a luck factor involved, because each boss drops only one or two items every time, so you will probably not get what you need the first time you go there. However, instances are challenging, fun and you get a feeling of success after killing a hard boss.

• Questing, where you (alone or with friends) quest for rewards in the end of a long quest chain.

• Reputation, where you do tasks for a certain group or faction, and gain reputation for a job well done. Eventually, you will be promoted within their faction, and earn the right to buy rare items only sold by that faction.

• Raiding, where you and 24 other people venture into a raid dungeon for 25 people. These dungeons usually require a lot more time practicing on tactics for each and every new boss, but they are very rewarding. It’s uncommon to find people searching for these kinds of groups, as guilds travel together into these dungeons. If you want to try raiding, you should first get a guild.
